St. Gabriel's is a Church of England Parish Church which seeks to serve all those who live in the parish of Heaton, whether they are people of faith or not. As such we feel called to be open to all, and actively seek ways to show care for the local community, through work with both young and old and everyone in-between! We believe that God calls us to join with him in bringing in his kingdom, and social justice has been, and is, a key part of our sense of mission.
St. Gabriel's Church community was at the forefront of campaigning for the ordination of women as priests and bishops in the Church of England, and some of the first women priests in Newcastle were from St. Gabriel's congregation. Alison Kay, who worshipped at St. Gabriel's, founded the People's Kitchen, a charity in Newcastle that cares for the homeless, and one of the current congregation founded Martha and Mary's on Chillingham Road, a cafe run by volunteers, which provides a warm welcome and hospitality as well as a place for people to meet.
St. Gabriel's is strongly committed to working with other Christians and plays an active part in Heaton Churches Together.
As a Church community we are particularly excited about how we grow in our knowledge of God and his love for us and all his creation. The main services on Sunday are:
8.00am, Holy Eucharist
This is a simple said service using Common Worship without hymns, in the Lady Chapel. It finishes about 8.45am.
9.45am, Parish Eucharist
This is the main Sunday service (using Common Worship) with a robed choir and hymns; there is usually Junior Church, and always a children's play area. It finishes about 11.00am, after which you are invited to stay for tea and coffee and a biscuit.
11.45am, Baptism service (by arrangement)
6.30pm, Evening Service (alternatively Choral Evensong using the Book of Common Prayer, Compline, Praise Service, Healing Eucharist)
Morning and Evening Prayer are said most days in church. Every Thursday there is a said Eucharist at 9.30am. There is normally a Eucharist offered for Holy Days and Feast Days. Incense is used for major feasts and at evening prayer. We take prayer seriously and are very happy to pray for anything that you ask us to pray for.
